Toyota Hybrid Vehicles: Toyota President Akio Toyoda has created a stir in the auto market by making a shocking statement about electric vehicles. He has directly questioned the environmental claims of EVs and raised a big question on EV technology. According to him, EVs only avoid tailpipe emissions, but the electricity required for them is mainly generated from coal-based thermal plants, so the overall carbon emissions do not reduce.
Toyoda said that it is dangerous to focus on a single type of technology to overcome carbon emissions. Although EVs do not pollute through the tailpipe, a large amount of carbon is released into the air while generating the electricity required to run them. Especially in a country like India, where electricity generation depends on coal, EVs will not be an environmentally friendly solution.
Hybrid vehicles are the need of the hour –
Instead of leaning solely towards EVs, Toyota has embraced multiple options. The company has focused on all types such as hybrids, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells and conventional EVs. According to Toyoda, hybrid vehicles are the most viable option for the present time, as they are relatively affordable and also offer a long range without the need for charging.
In countries like India, where EV vehicles are expensive and charging infrastructure is not yet developed, hybrid vehicles are receiving a good response. In states like Uttar Pradesh, such vehicles are being encouraged by giving discounts on road tax. In view of all this, Toyota is adopting a more balanced and viable policy instead of EVs.
Other options are also needed along with EVs
Toyoda explained that carbon emissions are the real enemy and other measures are also needed to combat it along with EVs. While promoting EVs, it is important to consider not only the sweet promises of zero tailpipe emissions, but also the background of power generation, charging difficulties and the entire life-cycle carbon footprint.
This clearly shows that Toyota is giving the global auto industry a parallel and realistic direction by thinking beyond just popular trends. They have also hinted that the company is drawing up a big master plan for hybrids in India.
