It has earned rave reviews for its attractive styling and enhanced performance. After a redesign, the 2023 Tundra is primarily a carryover model. However, it offers an SX package with bold styling. The 2023 Toyota Tundra has finally brought a new generation to Toyota’s flagship pickup after more than a decade of transitions. This pickup not only boasted a completely new look inside and out, but also received completely new transmission options. Since this redesign is only entering its second model year, we expect the 2023 Toyota Tundra to be a carryover model.

On the outside, the all-new Tundra boasts an upright design with hard corners and plenty of blocking to please truck traditionalists. It pulls a bit from the smaller Toyota Tacoma and beefs it up to fit this larger body. Inside, the new Tundra has a sharp cockpit that delicately blends the angles and shapes of the trunk with premium features and materials on higher trims. In addition, Toyota has significantly reduced clutter by eliminating many of the buttons and knobs. For 2023, the Tundra is getting a new SX package that is only available on select SR5 models. It gives the Tundra a bold style with dark gray metal 18-inch wheels and black trim. In the interior, this package replaces the smoked silver trim with black accents. The SX package is available in four exterior colors: White, Sky Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and Midnight Black Metallic.

Under the hood, the 2023 Toyota Tundra is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that produces 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Optionally, buyers can get the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, which combines a V6 with a 3.5-liter engine producing 437 hp. and torque of 583 lb-ft. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available.

The IIHS has not yet tested the current Tundra for safety, so there are no ratings to share. However, the current Tundra is equipped with safety technologies including standard automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, automatic high beams, hill start assist and rear seat reminder. 2023 Tundra specs: engine options, fuel economy and towing

Buyers of the 2023 Toyota Tacoma have two engine options to choose from. The standard v-6 i-FORCE 3.5L twin-turbo engine generates 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. For even more performance, pickup buyers can get the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. Combining a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with an engine-generator, it produces 437 hp. and 583 lb-ft of torque.

Both engines for the Tundra are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Also, the pickup truck can be equipped with a rear-wheel drive system or a traction-enhancing all-wheel drive system.2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Specs

For fuel economy, the Tundra gets up to 18 city/24 highway miles per gallon of gas mileage with the i-FORCE 3.5L twin-turbo V-6 engine and 20 city/24 highway miles per gallon with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain.

2023 Tundra SX Package Features

The only major difference between the Tundra 2023 and Tundra 2022 is the availability of the SX package. Tundra offers the SX package exclusively on the SR5 Double Cab trim with a 6.5-foot bed and the SR5 CrewMax trim with a 5.5-foot bed.

With various styling upgrades, the SX package gives the Tundra a bolder look. This includes dark gray metal 18-inch wheels, black door handles and a rear side bumper, and removed door badges for a minimalist look. Buyers of the Tundra SX package can choose from four exterior paint colors. This includes Midnight Black Metallic, Celestial Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic and White.

When designing the third generation Tundra, Toyota could have done just about anything and improved on the ancient outgoing truck. But the brand has gone all out by designing a car that is brand new from soup to nuts (and bolts). The result is a truck that’s better than before, but is that enough?

Thanks to the Tundra’s stiffer frame and available air suspension, on-road and off-road manners have improved. The turbocharged V-6 is smooth and strong, although the hybrid’s extra power and torque didn’t make it feel much better. We found some weird shifting logic from the gearbox.

Inside, the Tundra looks and feels a lot nicer than before, but here it falls short of the competition. Material quality and packaging choices seemed to lag behind other full-size pickups. Honestly, this sums up our impression of the new tundra: better than the old tundra, but perhaps no better than the segment leaders.

Is the tundra a hybrid?

Note that the Tundra engine displaces 3,445 cubic centimeters, which makes it closer to 3.4 liters than 3.5 liters, despite what Toyota specifies. In any case, every 2023 Tundra has some variation of a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission. RWD is standard, while 4WD is available. In base SR trim for the 2023 model year, it produces 348 hp. and 405 lb-ft of torque. Otherwise, it is rated at 389 hp. and 479 lb-ft.

The so-called i-Force Max powertrain complements the engine with electrical power. This V-6 hybrid setup makes 437 hp. and 583 lb-ft.

Since the Tundra was just redesigned last year, Toyota is keeping its full-size pickup largely the same for 2023. New this year for the SR5 trims the SX appearance package, which adds black and dark gray design cues to the Tundra’s exterior and interior trim. The SX package includes dark gray 18-inch wheels, black door handles, body trim, mid-section rear bumper, and blackout 4×4 rear badging. The interior accents are also changed to black and the Tundra door badges are removed. The SX package can be added to white, silver, gray or black exterior paint options.

The 2023 Toyota Tundra has a higher starting price than its domestic rivals. However, Toyota’s ENTRY-LEVEL SR trim has more desirable standard features, including a 379-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 and spring-loaded rear suspension. (Coil spring rear suspension is also standard on the Ram 1500.) We think one of them is the SR5 with the TRD Off-Road package, which brings an electronically locking rear differential, unique wheels, upgraded suspension and other additions.

Engine, transmission and performance

The 2023 Toyota Tundra is the only full-size pickup not available with a V-8 engine. Instead, it’s only offered with a twin-turbo V-6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This engine comes in three different potencies. On base SR trim, the non-hybrid engine makes 348 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque. Otherwise it is 389 horses and 479 lb-ft. The hybrid version is equipped with an electric motor integrated into the transmission which allows pure electric driving at low speeds. The combination generates a combined 437 horses and 583 lb-ft and cuts the time from zero to 60 mph to 5.7 seconds. Also changed from its predecessor was the rear suspension, which previously used a leaf spring setup. The Tundra now uses a more advanced coil spring rear suspension that improves its ride and handling characteristics. This was obvious with the versions we were using.

Toyota continues to offer the popular TRD Off-Road and TRD Sport packages. The first includes off-road suspension, skid plates and unique wheels. The latter includes lowered suspension and 20-inch wheels. Those looking for the ultimate in off-road capability will want the TRD Pro, which features a raised suspension and exclusive dampers, as well as a special set of black 18-inch wheels mounted on all-terrain tires.
