2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro United Kingdom Review – The Toyota 4Runner is not a large medium SUV, but has an incredible off-road dexterity and one of the largest cargo wineries of its kind. Still, it has a low fuel consumption and its heavy handling is marked by a remarkable inclination of the body and a lot of movement on the blows. In almost a decade without a complete redesign, the 4Runner’s cockpit is beginning to look antiquated, and low-feeling materials dominate. This SUV also lacks the advanced security technology you can get on many new vehicles.
The main attraction of the 4Runner is its strong off-road capability, but this Toyota is not a good buy if you are looking for a daily driver. Even if you prioritize a lot of load space and rock-tracking adventures, the high MSRP of 4Runner for the class should discourage it. For less money, consider the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which can handle trails as well as driving freeways and parking lots in shopping malls. The Toyota Highlander is not as strong as the 4Runner, but it has a luxury cabin, plenty of space and comes with more driver assistance features.
The 4Runner only sees minor changes for model year 2019. There is an optional Nightshade package that is based on the Limited edge, with black design elements inside and out. The TRD Pro model obtains additional off-road performance features, such as 2.5-inch Fox shocks, a TRD luggage rack, a TRD seal slip plate, and a standard JBL stereo. Buying a used 4Runner instead of a new one will probably save you thousands of dollars and provide you with a very similar vehicle.

The Toyota 4Runner 2019 has a MSRP of $34.910, making it one of the most expensive models of our medium-sized SUV rating. The two lowest finishing levels and the highest limited setting come from rear-drive series, and can add four-wheel drive for a couple of thousand dollars. Off-road TRD models come with 4WD and cost between $38.000 and $46.500.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the best 4Runner competition in the class when it comes to off-road capability. Although they are close in this sense, the Jeep does almost everything else better. The Grand Cherokee has a luxury cabin with easy-to-use features and comfortable driving quality. This Jeep also offers a wide range of engine options, from a powerful standard V6 to a turbodiesel of low fuel consumption and some monstrous V8. However, the 4Runner has more cargo space and a third row available, which is not offered on the Grand Cherokee. However, these positive aspects are not enough to overcome the disadvantages of the 4Runner, so go with the Jeep.
The Toyota Highlander occupies a prominent position in the mid-SUV segment, and is an opposite pole to its brand-name partner, the 4Runner. The Highlander has a luxury interior and comes with a ton of standard driver assistance technology. The 4Runner offers little more than basic parking sensors. The comfort of running is better with the Highlander, but its basic four-cylinder engine has little power. Both Toyotas have a ton of load space, and you will get a few extra cubic feet behind the standard third row of Highlander that behind the optional third row of the 4Runner. The only reason to go with a 4Runner about a Highlander is if you want a better off-road capability. The Highlander is a much more complete SUV.
The Toyota 4Runner comes standard with five seats, but can add a third row that increases the capacity to seven. The fabric upholstery of the base model is not very attractive, but the upholstery of synthetic leather and leather available improves the quality. There is enough space for the passengers in the front seats and in the second row for extended trips, but it is better to leave the seats in the third row for the children. With the third row, the second row slides and provides a one-touch bend for easy access to the back.
The 4Runner has two complete sets of LATCH car seat connections in the second row and a dedicated mooring anchor for the center seat. The Road Safety Insurance Institute granted the system the second-lowest Marginal rating for its ease of general use. You can confuse other devices in the seat backs for the anchors. The lower anchors are placed deep in the seats and require significant force to attach the seat straps to the anchors.
In line with the robust personality of the 4Runner, the cabin lacks luxuries and luxuries. There are a lot of hard plastic materials, and the design is simple and straightforward. That could also be a product of the current generation of 4Runner that approaches a decade without a complete redesign.
The 4Runner has a ton of cargo space for a medium SUV. It serves up to 47.2 cubic feet of space behind its second row, which can fully fold to access 89.7 cubic feet. Opting for the third row will give you only 9 cubic feet of space behind those seats. The cargo hold of the 4Runner is square, which makes it easy to transport large or bulky items. The hatch opening is also large and wide, which further enhances utility.
The standard features of the 2019 4Runner include entertainment services such as a 6.1-inch touch screen and satellite radio, as well as practical considerations such as a 120 volt outlet. The Entune interface of Toyota responds quickly to your touches, but its small size makes it difficult to read the optional navigation or to precisely press the virtual button you want. Instead of features such as Android Auto and Apple display, the 4Runner can be equipped with an updated information and entertainment system that features Toyota’s native phone application connectivity. Other optional features include dual zone automatic climate control, proximity key input, push button start, moonroof, and a JBL 15-speaker stereo.
The Spartan interior design of the 4Runner features large buttons and knobs that help make it easier to adjust the audio volume and temperature. These controls are placed prominently in the center stack at the driver’s reach.
The only engine available with the 4Runner is a 4.0-liter V6 that generates 270 horsepower. It’s not the most powerful engine in the class, but it does the job with pleasure. You will have a lot of power from a stop or to advance vehicles on the road. The V6 is coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission, which works well. The changes are smooth and accurate, and the transmission always finds the right gear for the situation.
With standard rear-wheel drive, the 2019 4Runner obtains 17 mpg in city and 21 mpg on the road. Those estimates are pretty low for a medium SUV. A four-wheel drive 4Runner has 17 mpg in city and 20 mpg on the road.
Rivals with V6 engines like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Toyota Highlander perform better. The Grand Cherokee gets up to 19 mpg in town and 26 mpg on the road, while the Highlander gains up to 20/27 mpg in city/highway.
The 4Runner is one of the few holdouts among the SUV that still uses a body-to-frame structure. That makes it drive more like a truck than a car, with a certain inclination of the body when it curves strongly. The 4Runner loses some composure on broken or irregular pavement, displaying a rigid and inflatable ride. You may also need to make more corrections than you need to keep your control at high speeds. Still, the steering is light and accurate enough for easy maneuverability.
This Toyota is not the best on pavement, but it is a formidable SUV. TRD models have most of the upgrades to deviate, such as a rear differential with lock, multi-terrain selection and tracking control. Other amenities include Fox shock absorbers, TRD-tuned springs, dynamic kinetic suspension and special slip plates.
At the time of writing this document, the Toyota 4Runner 2019 still does not have a reliability index predicted by J.D. Power.
Toyota covers the 4Runner with a basic warranty of three years/36.000 miles and a five year warranty/60.000 miles of motor train.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the 4Runner 2019 four of five stars for its overall shock test rating. The 4Runner obtained four stars in the frontal shock test, five stars in the side-crash test and three five-star in the reinvestment test.
The only other optional driver support features are front and rear parking sensors. Most of the other Toyota vehicles have a lot of active security technology.
The Toyota 4Runner 2019 comes in several levels of equipment: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD off-road, TRD off-road premium, TRD Pro and Limited. The rear wheel drive is standard, and the four-wheel drive is optional. The models with the designation TRD are standard with four-wheel drive.
The base model is decently equipped with an information and entertainment system with touch screen, satellite radio and a 120 volt outlet. The SR5 Premium model can be a better choice for most shoppers, as it features more amenities such as navigation, smartphone application connectivity, and more beautiful synthetic leather seats. Many features such as leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and proximity key entry are only found in the highest Limited model, which is about $8.000 more expensive than the base model.
The Toyota 4Runner 2019 has a MSRP of $34.910 with rear wheel drive and $36.785 with four-wheel drive. Standard features include fabric upholstery, an eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an inclined and telescopic steering wheel with leather trim, a 120 volt receptacle and a rear view camera. Infotainment’s standard configuration consists of a 6.1 inch touchscreen, a stereo with eight speakers, a USB port, Bluetooth, HD Radio, and satellite radio. The options include a third row and an information and entertainment system with navigation and the set of Entune applications.
The 4Runner SR5 Premium is sold for $36.740 with rear wheel drive and $38.615 with four-wheel drive. Adds synthetic leather seats, a passenger seat with four-way electrical adjustment, navigation and Entune application set. A moonroof is optional.
The TRD Off-Road ornaments come standard with four-wheel drive, multi-terrain selection mode, tracking control and a rear differential with lock, all for $38.085. The navigation and premium information and entertainment system with the Entune application suite are optional. The 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium costs $39.995 and includes front seats with heating, navigation and the Entune application pack. A sliding roof suspension and kinetic dynamics are optional on the Premium Off-Road.
For $46.415, the 4Runner TRD Pro model includes a JBL premium stereo 15-speaker and all-terrain accessories, such as 2.5-inch Fox shock absorbers, TRD-tuned springs, a roof bar and a TRD sliding plate.
The 4Runner Limited has a $43.225 rear-wheel drive MSRP and $45.260 with four-wheel total traction. Comes standard with features you can’t get in any other setting, such as dual zone automatic climate control, leather seats, ventilated front seats, front and rear parking sensors, proximity key input and Home.
Based on the Limited model, the Nightshade edition is sold for $44.965 with rear wheel drive and $47.000 with four-wheel drive. It has a dull appearance inside and out, including finishing pieces, moldings and the center console.
