For this generation, the Corolla offers a total of three thrusters. It retains the four-cylinder and 1.8-liter engine, which provides 139 horsepower and 126 lb/ft of torque for the L, LE and XLE equipment levels. The models SE and SXE use a new four litres of 2.0 liters with 169 horsepower and 151 lb/ft. Finally, the Corolla Hybrid uses a 1.8-liter Atkinson engine with 121 horsepower and 105 lb/ft, assisted by a good electric motor for 71 hp and 105 lb/ft.
The first Corolla we handled in the course of the day was a Corolla XSE with the new color Celestite Gray Metallic Paint. Our Corolla Hybrid tester was a “Blizzard Pearl” white, with a cream-colored interior. From the outside, it seems almost identical to the standard Corolla, apart from the insignia, although those with a sharp eye may notice the smaller 15-inch wheels. The interior is also similar, but we were immediately surprised at how cheap it looks in this lighter interior color. The black hides the artificial texture of the plastic, but the cream color amplifies it.
The Corolla Hybrid is impressively silent, with a bit of rim noise and a weak engine rumbling under acceleration. But most of the time it was hard to tell if the engine was running without looking at the screen.
The Corolla Hybrid has several driving modes: ECHO, Normal, energy and an EV mode, all selected by the buttons on the shifter. And for those who want an uncomplicated hybrid power train at an affordable price, the Corolla hybrid is a winning prospect. It is superior to the Prius C that it replaces in terms of content, quality and manageability. While we still like the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid in this segment for its 58 mpg combined, the Corolla is more refined, with more standard content. We are pleased to see Toyota inject a serious and dominant competition into the compact hybrid segment. And with the Corolla nameplate, this hybrid is destined to sell.
The fuel savings numbers for the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and the 2020 Corolla sedan have been published by FuelEconomy.gov, and the hybrid is impressively frugal. It gets 53 miles per gallon in city, 52 on the road and 52 combined. That puts the Corolla Hybrid on par with the regular Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight, each of which has the same combined fuel economy numbers. Both make it a little better in town than the Corolla, but a little worse on the road.
As for the non-hybrid Corolla sedan, it has an improved fuel economy than its predecessor. Toyota has not given a specific sale date for the Corolla Hybrid and sedan, but both should be for sale later this year. The price has also not been announced, but it should be available closer to the launch of the Corolla.
